When I stood on stage at this year’s Women in Aviation Australia Conference, surrounded by so many incredible women and men, I spoke about a form of leadership that often goes unnoticed, yet I believe it can be the most powerful of all.

Quiet leadership.
It’s the kind that doesn’t need to take up space to have an impact. The kind that empowers with grace and humility, that lifts others through quiet encouragement rather than loud instruction.
For many years, I believed that leadership meant being the one at the front, taking charge, speaking the loudest, making things happen. But over time, and through my experiences of building teams, mentoring others, and navigating challenges in aviation and life, I have learned that leadership takes many forms.
Some of the most influential people I’ve known have led gently, through compassion, consistency, and courage. They don’t demand respect; they earn it through their actions. They make you feel seen, valued, and capable.

In aviation, where precision and performance often take center stage, it’s easy to overlook the quiet strength that underpins true teamwork, the calm voice in the cockpit, the steady hand during turbulence, the mentor who gives you confidence when you doubt yourself.
Quiet leadership doesn’t shout for attention. It creates attention, by the way it makes others feel capable of more than they ever imagined.
So, here’s to the quiet leaders: Those who lead with heart. Who empower through humility.
Who understand that leadership isn’t about standing above but walking beside.
