As a woman working in a male-dominated field, the fear of being judged and not measuring up to my colleagues and superiors was always at the back of my mind. And when it came to flying in low visibility and instrument flying conditions, that fear was only amplified.
In these situations, you have to rely on your instruments to navigate the plane and make split-second decisions. Any mistake or hesitation could have serious consequences. So not only was I worried about my own safety, but I also felt the pressure to perform at my best and not let my fear show.
It was a daunting task, and there were times when I wanted to give up and avoid flying in these conditions altogether. But I knew that if I wanted to succeed in my career, I had to face my fear and learn to fly confidently in any situation.
So I started by educating myself on all aspects of instrument flying, from the mechanics of the plane to the different instruments and how to use them effectively. I also sought out mentors and leaned on my support system for guidance and encouragement.
It wasn't easy, and there were certainly moments of doubt and uncertainty. But with each successful flight in low visibility conditions, I gained more confidence in my abilities. And eventually, I was able to not only fly with confidence in any situation, but also use those skills to navigate other challenges in my personal and professional life.
So if you're feeling fear and uncertainty in your own life, know that it's completely normal and that you are not alone. Don't let fear hold you back from achieving your goals. Instead, use it as a motivator to educate yourself and seek out support, and you too can overcome any challenge that comes your way
